How To Choose A Hip-Hop Publicist For Rappers

Choosing a publicist in hip-hop is an essential step in taking your music career to the next level. A publicist will help you and teach you how to promote your music and brand to anyone that fits your target audience.
Now, if you’re still in the early stages of your music career – you won’t need a publicist. Your money is probably better spent on building your fanbase and making music.
However, if you are at that point in your hip-hop music career where you feel like you need a publicist, I’ll give you a few different ways to find a publicist as a rapper.

The Best Way To Choose A Publicist For Rappers

Referrals.
Without a doubt, the best way to choose a publicist in hip-hop is by getting a referral from someone you trust.
Hip-Hop is full of publicists with a poor work ethic that offers shady/scammy services. You really want to avoid these people.
By getting a referral from someone you know and trust, this will help prevent that. Most likely, the person who gave you the referral was happy with the service from the publicist, which is why they recommended them in the first place.

Find Your Favorite Rappers Publicist

Another way to find a publicist in hip-hop is to search for your favorite rappers publicist.
This method will allow you to find a publicist who has been vetted (somewhat) by a rapper doing exactly what you’re trying to do.

The publicists you find via this method will likely be expensive. As soon as a publicist can list a popular rapper as a client, prices tend to go up immediately.
Don’t worry, there’s a way we can mix both this method and the referral method I talked about above.
Instead of trying to hire your favorite rapper’s publicist (or PR Firm), contact them and ask them who would they recommend that fits your budget.
Your reputation is everything in hip-hop, and people try (really hard) not to ruin their reputation. So, you’ll probably get some decent referrals.

Use Google And/Or Social Media

This method of finding a hip-hop publicist is my least favorite.
Do you know those publicists with a poor work ethic and scammy services that I mentioned above? Well, they love to look good on Google and social media.
My recommendation is that, if you’re going to look for a hip-hop publicist via Google or social media, you need to thoroughly vet and verify them (which you should be doing anyway, but it’s more likely to lead to wasted money if you don’t when using this method)
Here are a few ways to vet them:
  • Contact their current/previous clients.
  • Ask people you know and trust if they know anything about this publicist.
  • Ask for any credentials that help demonstrate that they can do what you need them to.

Key Takeaways

  • The best way to find a hip-hop publicist is through a referral
  • Make sure to vet the publicist you’re planning on hiring
  • You don’t need a publicist if you’re still in the early stages of your music career
